January 14, 2016

The first order of business in the Iowa House of Representatives on Monday was to swear in two new legislators who were elected last fall in special elections. The House also welcomed Rep. Linda Upmeyer (R-Clear Lake) as speaker. She replaces Rep. Kraig Paulsen (R-Cedar Rapids) and is the first female speaker in the House. Speaker Upmeyer’s remarks focused on passing a sustainable budget, support funding for education and pursue opportunities that increase opportunities for Iowa.

House Majority Leader Chris Hagenow (R-Windsor Heights) discussed goals of setting school funding early in the session and continuing to grow Iowa’s skilled workforce.

House Democratic Leader Mark Smith (D-Marshalltown) focused his remarks on making college and job training affordable. He mentioned House Democrats support expanding early childhood education, increasing the minimum wage, and making changes to Medicaid. For full remarks, click here.
