SAVE discussions begin

February 4, 2016

The Iowa House on Tuesday started the conversation regarding extending the statewide penny for school infrastructure. The penny is set to expire in 2029, but many school districts need the extension now because the sunset prevents them from borrowing money. Members of House Education and Ways and Means subcommittees discussed alternatives to extending the penny and also using the growth for other means such as reducing property taxes, addressing per pupil inequities and transportation costs. The three bills are: HSB 548, HSB 549, HSB 551. The Governor’s proposal to extend the penny and use the growth for water funding is expected to be introduced in the coming days.
