Building Iowa's Workforce Through Work-Based Learning
April 20, 2026 | Anne Lowder
Work-based learning is one of the most effective ways to build Iowa’s future workforce, connecting students to real career pathways while helping employers develop talent early. Through hands-on experiences like job shadows, internships, company tours, and classroom engagement, employers play a direct role in shaping the skills and awareness students need to succeed.
ABI continues to expand opportunities for meaningful employer involvement by partnering with schools and organizations across the state. One key partner in this work is iJAG (Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates), whose network of Career Education Specialists supports students in building career readiness skills and connecting with local employers. Together, ABI and iJAG are making it easier for businesses of all sizes to get involved in ways that align with their capacity and workforce needs.
A major tool supporting this effort is the Connect 2 Business (C2B) platform. C2B serves as a centralized hub where employers can post opportunities, connect with educators, and engage directly with students. Whether you’re hosting a workplace tour, offering a real-world project/problem for students to tackle in the classroom, or providing internship opportunities, the platform streamlines the process and helps ensure your time makes a meaningful impact.
Getting involved doesn’t have to start with offering an internship. There are simple ways to engage that can grow over time. Even a one-time classroom visit or career talk can open students’ eyes to new possibilities and strengthen your organization’s visibility in the community. For employers looking to build a long-term talent pipeline, work-based learning offers a practical and rewarding way to invest in the next generation.
