Biden Unveils “American Families Plan”

April 30, 2021

President Joe Biden delivered his first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday evening where he made the case for his next significant legislative proposal in the American Families Plan. The $1.8 trillion package would significantly expand the government’s role in providing child care resources for families and making additional educational opportunities available for individuals. The legislation would do a number of things, including:

  • Spending $109 billion to make community college “free”
  • Expanding Pell Grants for low-income students
  • Enacting 12 weeks of paid leave
  • Investing $200 billion in universal preschool, and more.

The plan would be funded by raising taxes on wealthier individuals and businesses. This is the third major proposal President Biden has put forward. He recently signed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill and also released a $2.3 trillion infrastructure package. It is expected to take several months before any kind of agreement might be reached on these spending packages. You can read more from Bloomberg. You can also see the President’s full remarks here.
