Federal Spotlight: House Votes to Repeal Cadillac Tax

July 18, 2019

On Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved passage of HR 748, which eliminates the “Cadillac Tax.” The bill, the Middle Class Health Benefits Tax Repeal Act of 2019, passed the lower chamber with a strong bipartisan vote of 419-6. The tax was created under the Affordable Care Act in 2010 as a means of helping to pay for the healthcare law. It adds a 40% surcharge tax to high-cost employer healthcare plans. Congress has delayed implementation of the tax twice, and it’s currently set to go into effect in 2022. ABI, along with hundreds of other diverse stakeholders, recently signed a letter urging Congress to repeal this onerous tax. ABI would like to thank all four members of our House Delegation for their support of this legislation.
