Federal Spotlight: Walsh Confirmed as Labor Secretary

March 25, 2021

The U.S. Senate, in a 68-29 vote, confirmed Marty Walsh as the 29th Secretary of Labor this week. The former mayor of Boston will lead the U.S. Department of Labor as the agency focuses on the nation’s unemployment rate and workplace safety during the pandemic.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce supported Walsh’s nomination. In a February letter, the U.S. Chamber highlighted how:

  • Walsh launched the “Building Pathways” program, as well as the “Learn and Earn” Internship in the Boston area.
  • Both programs helped Boston-area residents find well-paying jobs.
  • Walsh's cooperation with the business community and dedication to expanding employment and career opportunities are qualifications to be the next Secretary of Labor.

Walsh said in a statement that he plans to help the nation’s economy build back better.
