January 17, 2019

Prior to the governor’s Condition of the State on Tuesday, Director of Management David Roederer provided reporters a pen and paper review of the state budget. Highlights included: $20 million for Future Ready Iowa, $20 million over the next two years for broadband expansion and $152 million for property tax backfill dollars to local governments. The governor is proposing more than $1.9 billion for health and human services and an increase of approximately $93 million in funding for pre K-12. You can read her entire budget request.

This is just the first step in the budget negotiations that are expected to go on throughout the legislative session. The Legislature will review the governor’s budget and then work in budget subcommittees to come to their own recommendations for a balanced budget.
