Insurance Commissioner Speaks to House Commerce

January 24, 2019

On Tuesday, Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen provided an update to members of the House Commerce Committee about the Insurance Division. Commissioner Ommen discussed the economic footprint of Iowa’s insurance industry, stating that 43,000 jobs are tied to the industry and it ranks second in terms of GDP output for the economy. The commissioner touched on the duties of the office. Much of Commissioner Ommen’s remarks and follow-up questions were focused on Iowa’s health insurance market and the changes that have occurred since the passage of the Affordable Care Act at the federal level. The commissioner provided interesting data about the ages of those insured on the exchange and the demographics of individuals leaving the exchange.
